Andy Gotts

BIOGRAPHY

Andy Gotts MBE MA is an internationally acclaimed photographer celebrated for his striking black-and-white portraits of Hollywood actors, iconic musicians, and cultural legends. Splitting his time between London and New York, Gotts has been capturing the faces that define contemporary culture since 1990.

His work has been published in some of the world’s leading magazines, including French Vogue, Italian Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, Elle, Entertainment Weekly, Marie Claire, and many more. His portraits have also fronted international advertising campaigns and weekend newspaper supplements, cementing his reputation as one of the most sought-after portrait photographers of his generation.

The National Portrait Gallery holds several of Gotts’s works in its permanent collection, a testament to his enduring contribution to the art of photography. In recognition of his craft, he received the Fox Talbot Award for excellence in photography in 2009, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts in 2011, and served as President of the British Institute of Professional Photographers. In 2012, he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Her Majesty The Queen.

Gotts is perhaps most noted for his magnum opus Degrees—inspired by the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” game—as well as the BAFTA-commissioned Behind the Mask, Vivienne Westwood’s Save the Arctic, the Monty Python reunion, and Unseen, a project featuring 100 contact sheets of Hollywood actors and world-famous musicians. His recent exhibitions, such as Icons (Maddox Gallery, 2021), Nemesis (2023), and The Playlist (Las Vegas, 2024), continue to captivate international audiences.

In 2025, Gotts celebrates two milestones: 35 years as a celebrity photographer and 20 years since the release of his bestselling book, Degrees. Marking the occasion, major exhibitions are planned across Los Angeles, Stockholm, and Monaco, reaffirming his legacy as a cultural chronicler through portraiture.
