Project Brief – Six Cortlandt Alley Presentation
Rachel Vancelette curated a special gallery presentation housed within a luxury residential space—a loft at Tribeca’s Six Cortlandt Alley. This project represented a creative departure from the traditional gallery context, translating fine art into a refined residential environment, co‑presented with Halstead Property Development Marketing.
Cortlandt Alley has always carried a raw cultural energy. It’s one of the few true alleys left in Manhattan, its walls immortalized on film and in countless downtown stories. Just steps away, at 77 White Street, the legendary Mudd Club thrived from 1978 to 1983 — a nightclub where artists, musicians, and icons like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lou Reed, Andy Warhol, and Talking Heads gathered. The spirit of that era — gritty, experimental, and alive with creativity — still lingers in the bricks and shadows of the alley.
To curate an exhibition in this historic place, surrounded by that legacy, felt like honoring its past while reimagining its future. Artists including Bernard Aubertin, Joseph Cohen, Juan Garaizabal, Jeffrey Gibson, Mahmoud Hamadani, Keith Haring, Martin Kline, Hans Kotter, Robert Lazzarini, Rashaad Newsome, Pino Pinelli, and Devan Shimoyama. Their works filled the space with the same fearless energy that once defined the alley’s cultural heartbeat.

COOKING WITH ARTISTS
A Recipe for Memory — Rossella Vasta
In A Recipe for Memory, artist Rossella Vasta honors a dish dear to the heart of the late American sculptor Beverly Pepper, whose life and work were profoundly entwined with Umbria and dedicated to brother's birthday celebration, a video made with care. Filmed on location in Corciano, the piece is part culinary ritual, part studio meditation and family kitchen—an intimate performance in which Vasta prepares the recipe slowly, by hand, letting gestures of chopping, kneading embodied rhythms of making art. Cooking for her brother's birthday- it is delightful behind the scene video on cooking with your passion.
The kitchen becomes a workshop; ingredients stand in for raw materials—grain as aggregate, oil as patina, heat as a transformative force. As Vasta moves through the steps, she recalls stories of friends, and generous presence in the region rooted for decades in nearby Todi—shaped a landscape of art, friendship, and hospitality.
Cinematography favors daylight and the textures of lived space—stone, linen, wood—so the recipe’s modest origins can shine without adornment. Ambient sound—the scrape of a knife, the hiss of the pan, voices and music of friends— The final sequence returns the meal to its first purpose: to be shared. Plates are passed across a table in Corciano, and with them, a lineage—of making, of mentoring, of feeding the work and the people who carry it forward. It will bring a smile to your day!
